Melasma

Melasma is a common skin condition that causes hyper-pigmentation on the facial area. This condition if often referred to as the ‘mask of pregnancy’ but can occur in both genders & without being pregnant.
The cause of melasma is unknown but there appears to be a strong hormone link. Researchers believe that the presence of oestrogen receptors on the pigment producing cells may stimulate the cells to produce more melanin, causing the dark patches to develop.
Certain oral contraceptive pills, hormone therapy, pregnancy, stress & thyroid disease have been linked to melasma. A recent study has shown 45% of women with melisma demonstrated a deficiency in the mineral Zinc. In some cases, melamsa lesions disappear over time but in persistent melisma pigmentation can remain long after hormone stimulus has been removed.

Natural ways to help Melasma

  • Apply topical Vitamin C or Alpha arbutin- these plant based anti-oxidants has been clinically proven to reduce hyper-pigmentation.
  • Consume or take Zinc supplement- There has been research that demonstrates Zinc deficiency in 45% of women who suffer from Melamsa. We know this mineral is key for skin & immune health. Aim for 30mg daily.
  • Consume Bioflavonoids in diet- these are naturally occurring anti-inflammatories/anti-oxidants. Foods include brightly coloured fruit and vegetables, dark chocolate, turmeric powder
  • Consume foods rich in Lutien- Commonly known for helping eyesight, this nutrient has been proven to reduce hyper-pigmentation. Foods rich in Lutien are fruits/vegetables rich in red/yellow colours. Consume red and yellow tomatoes and peppers.
  • Liver support- This organ is the body’s primary detoxifier. Supporting your liver is critical to the metabolism & function of your hormones. Daily Milk thistle or weekly Nourish IV Glutathione shots can help balance hormone levels.
