The Power of Herbs

As summer comes to an end it is essential to to make sure our immune system is working well over winter. A simple and natural way to boost your immune system is with the help of herbs.

What are herbs?

Herbs are any plants with leaves, seeds, or flowers used for flavouring, food, medicine, or perfume. Herbs are extremely high in phyto-chemicals, a compound that can help strengthen your immune system, balance your hormones, reduce stress levels and aid digestion.

What is the best way to consume herbs?

  • Infusion: Pour boiled water over dry or fresh plant material and leave to infuse for 10 – 15 minutes.
  • Decoction: Put herbs into a saucepan and cover with boiling water. Simmer for 15 minutes. Keep lid on saucepan. Cool to drinking temperature and enjoy.

Nurse Fiona’s winter herbal decoction

1tsp Rosemary: helps to reduce stress, supports detoxification, anti-oxidant
1tsp of Sage: anti-microbial, anti-oxidant and helps to balance hormones
1tsp of Thyme: Anti-parasitic, anti-fungal. Aids digestion
1 tsp of Oregano: Helps to reduce gas, bloating, indigestion, Reduces bronchitis/common cold
4 cups of boiling water
**These herbs can be fresh or dried
** Add herbs to make infusion of decoction. Consume in large mug or glass jar throughout the day
