What causes acne?

Acne is most commonly linked to changes in hormone levels during puberty, however, there are thought to be a number of other potential triggers, such as diet, lifestyle, stress levels and genetics. Acne occurs when certain hormones cause the oil-producing glands next to the hair follicles in the skin to produce larger amounts of oil, called sebum. The excess sebum changes the activity of a usually harmless skin bacterium called P. acnes, which becomes more aggressive as a result, causing inflammation and pus.
